Hagia Ioannis (St. John) of Damascus wrote St: ”Apologia Against Those Who Decry Holy Images” as a counter argument to the iconoclasts using the argument of Christ being fully human born of a woman (and he walked among us) as a reason why we can depict God. He also wrote a lot of hymns, so many that the abbot of the monastery imposed a rule of silence on him (forbidding him to speak or write for a certain period). He couldn't help himself but wrote some hymns to the Theotokos (mother of God) anyway and was sentenced to clean the toilets in the monastery with a very little brush.
